the suns of august

"It's been so hot lately, we've had to wear mittens just to pick up our nuts!"
I spend a lot of time in coffee shops these days. It's the coolest place to be seen. My particular favorite is a neighborhood haunt named for a character in a Melville novel, but most of the patrons don't know this or would care to know. The coffee is good, the chairs are comfortable, and the reading is generally light- newspapers and prayer group minutes.

I admit to feeling a certain puritan guilt for the time I do spend there, though ultimately justified by the professional contacts I make, and the slow brewing of friendships that take place.

A well-known Austrian writer once wrote about a favorite coffee shop: "It's inhabitants are, for the most part, people whose aversion to other people is as acute as their need for other people, and who want to be alone but must have company to do so."

They asked me for a lyric to frame on the wall, and I'm proud to be hanging with Gary Burr and Victoria Shaw. The lyric is from a song I wrote with Cassie Peterson called, "In My Town":

"Now I'm in the dark again with Grand Piano, pad and pen, painting with these truths I've found, as self-appointed poet in my town."
