I wanted to like it, I really did!
But the longer I watched the new video on CMT the more reasons I found to dislike it. It doesn't have to be "The Song Remembers When" or "I Hope You Dance" for that matter, I was just trying to clue in on what elements about this song made a room full of smart, well-intentioned "creative" staff members all agree that, "Yes, this is the one to go with. Out of all the songs we've heard for this project, all the ones we've passed on by the greatest songwriters in the world,
one is it!"
I guess I was shaking my head at this point when the receptionist said, "You don't like this do you?" I replied, "I want to, I really do! But...." That's when she revealed the TRUTH to me, a TRUTH that belied her youth, a TRUTH that, with saint-like clarity, illuminated the very core of my being; "Do you know how much money this song is making?" (Pause) (Sound of trumpets in distance. Cue Strings)
It was like reading the Tao Te Ching for the first time, or hearing Anthony Hopkins speak in
- I was stunned, speechless. Of course! Making Lots Of Money Means The Song Is Written Well.
Needless to say, I shrunk out of there, crawled into my car, turned off 89.5 and felt, well, cheap.
